9.5 reasons to start with TikTok marketing
TikTok is mature, time to use it for your marketing. And yes, we're serious. As a social - quatons claim "adolescent" - medium, TikTok has made an impressive run in recent years. Meanwhile, it even outpaces the Twitters and Pinterests of this world. Time to really appreciate TikTok. Why do you, communication guru, marketing person or content creative, feel best addressed? 1. TIKTOK IS MATURE
Okay, you get it. So TikTok has grown up. The medium of TikTok has become mature and big business in a very short time. Chinese parent company Bytedance is now valued at $250 billion. 250. Billion! That's bigger than Microsoft. Bigger than Coca Cola. Olala.
2. TIKTOK IS MAINSTREAM
In addition to being mature and expensive (in terms of appreciation), TikTok is simply the talk of the town. Just some facts & figures:

- Most downloaded app in 2020
- Nearly 1 billion active monthly users
- Almost 3 million users in Belgium
3. HIGH ENGAGEMENT TO TIKTOK CONTENT
TikTok fascinates and continues to fascinate. Once you're hooked, it's only for a while. In Belgium, TikTokkers are active on the platform for an average of one hour per day. And anyone who is active likes it happily. TikTok also achieves better rates than Facebook and Instagram in terms of comments and reactions. A bit sour, isn't it, Zuckerberg?
4. NO FOLLOWERS, STILL VIRAL
The focus on “high engagement” primarily has to do with the typical TikTok algorithm. Without going into too much detail, it comes down to this: TikTok does not push the content of the users you follow ("following"), but it does push the content that is somehow relevant at that moment ("for you page ” or “FYP”). And by “catching on” we mean likes, comments and shares. This means that a user with 3 followers can score a big TikTok hit overnight.
5. IS THERE A PLACE ON THE “FOR YOU PAGE”?
So: the better your latest TikTok pitch is, the more likely your video will end up on the FYP or “for you page”. But how do you get there now? How do you ensure that your content resonates? TikTok works in mysterious ways. We stick to the following winning recipe:
- Anticipate on trends & challenges. Use music and/or effects that are “in”.
- Spice your content with the right hashtags.
- Even if you follow a trend, make sure you stand out in some way. Be authentic, original and entertaining.

6. TIKTOK IS CHILD'S PLAY
Again: don't take it literally, or at least not completely. Of course the kids are on TikTok en masse. The reason? It's bite-sized, but most importantly: it's super easy. You select a piece of music, you watch a short video (the standard duration of a TikTok video is 15''), you add an effect and hey, that's it. Look mom, without hands!
7. ADVERTISING ON TIKTOK (*)
Although the options are not yet as extensive as on Facebook and Instagram, advertising via TikTok is certainly worth considering. For a small sum you can easily get 100,000 "impressions".
